CreSci is a cultural and intellectual initiative, primarily based in the artistic city of Carrara, that seeks to redefine science as a form of creative expression rather than merely a technical pursuit.
CreSci’s core objective is to expand the concept of creativity into new, unconventional, and interdisciplinary realms. The project aims to foster a lasting dialogue between the arts and sciences, develop a shared language, and explore the fundamental interdisciplinary nature of creativity. This will be achieved through a series of events—including theoretical workshops, public lectures, and collaborative interdisciplinary projects—designed to facilitate meaningful interactions between scientists and artists while promoting scientific culture among the general public.
Carrara's name is indissolubly linked to white marble. This resource (although not without environmental and labor issues) has inevitably created an exceptional artistic milieu: not only does the historic Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara attract hundreds of students from all over Italy and beyond every year, but approximately 30% of the sixty thousand residents, from around the world, work as artists or in craft activities. This makes Carrara the ideal place to explore the concept of creativity beyond conventional frameworks. Since 2017, thanks to its established artistic and cultural initiatives – such as “Studi Aperti” and “Con-vivere” – Carrara has been recognized as a “Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art” by UNESCO, solidifying its status as a global center for artistic creativity.
For these reasons, we have identified Carrara as the ideal environment to develop the idea of "scientific creativity," as its legacy of centuries of art and culture provides a perfect ground to experiment with creativity in all its forms, not only in art but also in science. This unique environment has the potential to foster new synergies between artists and scientists, generating ideas and projects that unite these seemingly distant worlds, both driven by the same creative impulse.
