Creativity is the extraordinary ability to produce original, unusual, and valuable ideas or works using one's imagination. This commonly accepted definition can undoubtedly be applied beyond the arts or related activities (such as design or literature). In fact, scientific activity – particularly theoretical work aimed at investigating the fundamental components of the world around us – is just as creative as art. Science requires imagination, intuition, the ability to see unusual connections, and to shape concepts in unique ways, much like the artistic creation process.
Nevertheless, art and science are perceived in the collective imagination as being at opposite ends, perhaps even incompatible: while art is synonymous with freedom, unconventional thinking, and sometimes extravagance, "exact science" is seen as a formal, rigid, and technical activity that leaves little room for imagination.
For these reasons, as a group of theoretical physicists, computational scientists, and philosophers of science, we aim to initiate a deep dialogue about creativity in science, with particular attention to fundamental physics. Our goal is to challenge the common preconception of science as a technical field devoid of creativity, instead promoting the involvement of creative scientists in a broader intellectual debate.
Hosting academic gatherings to explore foundational questions in physics and philosophy
Our research line aims to attract an international community of physicists, philosophers, and stakeholders to Carrara for scientific events and initiatives. We intend to organize meetings, conferences, and workshops that not only foster the development of the foundations of physics but also promote their exploration as a creative activity. Choosing Carrara as the venue, with its captivating context, will provide an inspiring environment for the growth and dissemination of scientific ideas.
Creating opportunities for dialogue and collaboration between artists and scientists
This initiative aims to facilitate interaction between Carrara’s established artistic community and scientists, particularly physicists. Our main goal is to generate synergistic ideas and new forms of creativity, striving to establish a common language between the two fields that can foster collaborative projects. These initiatives may involve theoretical studies on the role of creativity and work-related challenges within their respective disciplines or direct collaborations between art and science.
Organizing lectures and cultural events aimed at a broad audience, in accessible language and formats
The final line of this initiative addresses the local community. The goal is to organize public events in squares, theaters, and venues, so that the population has the opportunity to engage with scientific outreach activities. These events (in Italian), conducted by national and international experts, will aim to enhance understanding and appreciation of scientific culture and enrich the overall cultural landscape of Carrara.
